Bovine TB pest control on the town side of river corridor

We have been notified that there is an intensive pest control (focused on possums) programme being undertaken on the town side of the Waikato River. The area covers from Spa Park down to Aratiatia.

This is in response to an outbreak of bovine TB in the East Taupo area. Bovine TB is a disease of farmed cattle and deer, for which the possum is primary host and vector. Control of the disease is by testing and slaughter of any test positive cattle or deer and by intensive control of possums in the area.

This possum control work is being undertaken by EPRO, under contract from OSPRI (the agency responsible for the eradication of bovine TB from NZ) and will run over the winter months

The control work consists of initial placement of white bait stations - which will contain non-toxic prefeed to attract possums into the area, followed by the establishment of a Flipping Timmy line which will be checked weekly.

For those of you that have traps in this area and that this will overlap (you would have seen the additional bait stations or traps in place), you can continue to control your own lines but note that the additional traps will be monitored by the EPRO staff. Any kills will be removed and recorded and the traps rebaited and reset.
