Craters MTB Park Update

As you may be aware, forestry logging has begun in Craters and for the past month, the logging crews have been focused in the Tourist Trap / Ferret areas.

The forestry crews are making great progress and to add to the great progress already made, a second crew has now arrived and is working in the 60 K Hill/ Buzzard areas. Please note: This will also increase the amount of activity and heavy machinery in Craters area on the Poihipi Rd side of the forest.

Bike Taupō have been fortunate enough to have had some access to the park. We have been quietly working away at clearing the tracks that will not be logged, but have trees lying over them. This in itself is a huge job as some tracks have anywhere between 50 to 100 trees over them.

The whole aim of this clearing work is that when the logging is finished, and the machines and logging trucks have moved out, Craters will be able open. We don’t anticipate that every track will be rideable at this time but we will provide further details as the logging progresses.

This update has three key messages. Firstly, to let you know that we are making progress, that we have a plan and it’s going well. Secondly, wto thank all those people who are staying out of Craters and letting us get on with the clean-up.

Finally, and most importantly, the forest managers both acknowledge and appreciate that people have been respecting the current access restrictions, and they ask that we all continue to do so while the harvesting activity continues.

We need to emphasise once again that if anybody is caught in Craters, we will lose our ability to clear the tracks.

Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you all back into the park as soon as possible.
