Our Aims
The Taupo Mountain Bike Club was established in 1990, and has been primarily responsible for the formation and maintenance of the extensive network of tracks used by mountain bikers in Wairakei Forest (also fondly known as Craters of the Moon). The Club mapped the tracks and erected signage and held regular working bees, and with the support and assistance of the former Wairakei Tourist Park management, and the Community Probation Service, ensured that the "Craters MTB Tracks" remained open and available to the residents of the Taupo District and visitors. The facility is well known to riders all over New Zealand and features in all editions of the book "Classic New Zealand Mountain Bike Rides (published by the Kennett Brothers). One reason for the popular appeal of the Craters MTB Tracks is their pumice surface, giving great riding in both summer and winter. More recently management of this land area has changed to Crown Forestry, and the Bike Taupo Advocacy Group is working to gain a concession from the Crown to ensure continued access for mountain bike riders. Each year the Club runs a number of fun and competitive events, and group rides. With few exceptions, there is an event each Thursday evening. Through the summer, this is a Twilight Handicap Series, which has wide appeal to all ages and abilities. Through the winter it is the regular Thursday group night ride and also, on the first Thursday of the month, a handicap night race (night racing is only for experienced riders). Over the winter there is also the Teams Race Series of three races, in a popular relay format, suitable for all ages and abilities. The Club provides education, training and coaching for members in the sport of mountain bike riding. It also advocates locally and nationally for land access for mountain biking. The Taupo Mountain Bike Club is affiliated to the national association, Mountain Biking New Zealand (MTBNZ). |
