Whakaipo Bay Community Planting Event

We hope to plant around 2,500 native trees in what will be an ongoing project to restore four gullies at the popular reserve near Taupo.  The plantings, made possible with financial support from Taupo's Rotary clubs, the Tongariro Natural History Society and Environment Waikato, will help protect Lake Taupo's water quality as well as prevent erosion and enhance the area for future generations.

New Zealand is hosting World Environment Day which is celebrated on June 5 and coincides with Arbor Day. The theme for World Environment Day 2008 is climate change with a focus on moving towards a low carbon economy and lifestyle.

"Kick the Habit" (the 'carbon' habit) is the international slogan for the event. The theme will also include the role of forest conservation and sustainable forestry in achieving domestic and global climate change goals.  A range of projects and events will be held around the country to promote sustainability.
