| Hard Labour Weekend - Taumarunui |
Hi All
Don't put your bikes and kayaks away just yet! Time to get in some winter training for the Hard Labour Weekend. Three days of some of the best riding and kayaking in the land!
The Courses
Saturday 23 October 2010 – Ohura Circuit Road Cycle (113km): Saturday 23rd October - Starts 9am outside the Taumarunui Hotel on Miriama Street. This will be the Ohura Circuit Road Bike, on sealed roads, including 26km on State Highway 4, and the rest on undulating country roads with 3 good hill climbs. Drafting is permitted. Normal road rules apply. At the turnaround it's single file so marshals can get your number before you head back to Taumarunui. To quote one of last year's competitors "by jees, she's character building... keeps you honest". Wim Seuren

Sunday 24 October 2010 – Whanganui Descent River Kayak (22km & 57km): Both courses start at Cherry Grove. The short course (22km) exit point is on the right of the river at a point known as Otunui Landing on Stratford Rd, where the Otunui Stream joins the river. There is a parking/picnic area at this point beside a bridge. Ohinepane is a few minutes paddle below. Competitors face 45 rapids with hardest a grade 2 about 20 minutes from the start at a section known as Hurlihy's Bluff. The long course (57km) ends at Whakahoro a challenging and exciting paddle. Hills tower above some sections of river while waterfalls feature where streams join the snaking Whanganui.
Short Course: 22km of moderate grade 2 paddling, beginning in Taumarunui at the Cherry Grove boat ramp and finishing at the Ohinepane boat ramp.
Long Course: 57km of moderate grade 2 paddling, beginning in Taumarunui at the Cherry grove boat ramp and finishing at the junction of the Whanganui and Retaruke Rivers at Whakahoro.
9:00am Race Briefing and race start at Cherry Grove. 9:30am - First categories leave Taumarunui. 10:00am - Last categories leave Taumarunui.
Monday 25 October 2010 – Mountain Bike Challenge (50km): Race briefing and race start is out-side the Taumarunui Hotel on Miriama Street. You head north along State Highway 4 for 10km then turn off onto Opotiki Road. A narrow metal road which climbs to 560m (Taumarunui is 171m) in about 8 km through native bush. About 11km up the road turn left onto a track on Porritt’s Farm, a short climb to the summit and then a fast 4km downhill ride down a farm race way to Aramahoe Road past the Porritt’s homestead and woolshed. Then a moderate 4km climb followed by a short but steep down hill section onto the Prestage’s Farm. Then an undulating climb through the forest to the top of the Kururau Hill. From there all down hill approximately 8km to the finish in Taumarunui outside the Taumarunui Hotel in Miriama Street.
8:30am - Race briefing. 9:00am - Race starts.
